Weekend crap.

I think I am the first to use the word CRAP in an HAUGENKOSKI'sBLOGSKI title. You know me... that's how I roll. Anyhew, a great weekend. My buddy Mike Fink pointed me thru the Zumbro as we (Mike) caught a respectable amount of crappies. I was surprised with the size of them as the body of water is small and the boat traffic heavy. Tip to anglers to remember boat registration, license, fire extinguisher, horn or whistle, throw cushion, life jackets and positive attitude when every other boat is bronze and the drivers wear badges.

We watched the movie UP as a family and worked on the yard this weekend. Jen's garden is in place along with a neighbor kid proof fence.

later,
Jay

Warning: UP is sad.

I feel it's my duty to let you know that the cute little Pixar/Disney movie, UP, that just came out is SAD. Like really sad. Like I cried at the beginning, middle AND end.

OK, maybe it's more touching than sad.

No, it's sad. I even cried in the car on the way home...

Jen's Training Log / May 28

I just had a breakthrough workout! I swam a half-mile tonight... but the big news is that I swam a full quarter-mile without stopping to rest. For the first time! It felt GREAT. And now I'm guaranteed a good night's sleep!

Memorial Weekend 09

Our weekend was held in De Pere, WI this year as we visited our old friends the Winklers. Loads of fun with good eats, games and the De Pere Memorial weekend festival.

Candy policy

I've revised my candy policy. I'm still not eating candy, persay... but if a food has candy IN it, say, M&M cookies, I can eat those.

Also, I've decided fudge is not technically a candy; it's more of a bakery offering.

And trail mix includes candy in its recipe, so that passes under the bar, too.

But that's all. :)

24 hours to go

My final packet of the semester is tomorrow. Can't wait for Friday!!

Jen's Training Log / May 17

This weekend was a wash, training-wise, until this afternoon. Jen's mom and dad were down for the weekend, and Jay had his big SPAM cook-off in Austin with his friend Will. (Yes, you read that right: SPAM cook-off. I'll let him fill you in.)

This afternoon, after a lovely lunch at HuHot with the gang, I took off for an hour-long bike ride with so many hills that I'm pretty sure I won't be able to walk by Tuesday. Felt great! :), Jen

BERGEN GOES CYBORG!

Yesterdays checkup led to the OR and a nights stay at St. Marys. Bergen now has a 2.5mm titanium rod in his arm to hold his wiggly little bones straight. Apparently there was enough room in his old cast for his bones to slide out of place.

Everyone send their thoughts and prayers to worried little Jen as she is the one without pain meds.

Jen's Training Log / May 13

This morning my neighbor LaNae showed up at my door and greeted me with, "Run with me!" And so we did. It was a tough outing, though. We had to walk several times and we only went a couple miles. Don't know what's up with that. Just one of those days, I guess.

Last night, Christian and I took a nice, long bike ride around our little corner of Rochester. We found a nice little field of bluebells down a trail we hadn't followed before. I'm really enjoying the biking portion of training. I like how much ground I can cover in a short time. (It's so much faster than running!) I'm anxious to get out by myself sometime this week and see what I can do.

Alright. Next week's column isn't going to write itself... Jen

Opener 09

Ike and I hit the lake hard on Saturday. It did snow. It did rain.

Despite the weather we managed to have a great time. The Northerns averaged about 10 pounds and the bass averaged about 3 to 4 pounds. I only lost about a pint of blood this year. A tough trip to beat next year as Ike and I traditionally get together to fish the opener.

Happy Mothers Day to all the moms out there... we are making a fresh fish recipe for Wanda today.

I included a PIC of Ike's boat. Isn't she a beaut?

Jen's Training Log / May 7

OK, so it's actually May 8 today... but I need to catch up. On the 6th, I attended the tri club meeting with all the newbies and got inspired! That was my training for the day.

On the 7th (that'd be yesterday, for those who are counting), I did laps for about 25 minutes. Mainly breast stroke, with a couple freestyle thrown in. The freestyle didn't kill me. I mean, sure. It WIPES ME OUT, but it's getting a little easier. :)

It's Mother's Day weekend -- Jay's annual weekend up in Aurora with the boys and MY annual weekend alone. Woohoo!! Bring it on!!

Jen's Training Log / May 5

I celebrated Cinco de Mayo with a 5-mile bike around NE Rochester with Christian. We checked out a nice wooded trail I'd wanted to try.

I'm on Day #3 of NO CANDY... so to compensate, I bought a package of fudge cookies at Shopko today and, I'm not kidding you, opened them while I was still at the check-out.

Jay laughed at me. But at least it wasn't candy! :), Jen

My Favorite 80s Prom Picture

Jen's Training Log / May 4

Hello all! A crazy, busy day means that today's sport is biking! I biked to Dunn Bros. (where I am right now) and will bike home when I'm done. Had to escape the house for a bit to meet a couple deadlines.

Here's what I learned: It's harder to bike uphill when you have a computer on your back.

Just saying.

Bergen has his follow-up appointment tomorrow for his arm. Cross your fingers that everything is healing as it should!! Smooches, Jen

Jen's Training Log / May 3

OK, I'm on a roll... 8-mile bike yesterday and 3-mile run today. Tomorrow I should try to get a swim in.

It's a beautiful warm, sunny day here. Sure is easier to train when the weather cooperates! :), Jen

Training in Earnest

Today was Day #1 of Serious Triathlon Training. Christian and I did an eight-mile bike ride... to the Farmer's Market and back. I think the bike is going to be my favorite segment of the race in August.

Also as part of training, I'm giving up candy -- starting today -- until after the triathlon. My friend, and co-trainee, Lisa, suggested it and I'm up for the challenge. (...she said haughtily after just one day of abstinence.)

Last night was Boogie for a Cure -- the girls' night out 80s prom fundraiser for Relay for Life team. About 130 bedazzled women came to boogie; the dance floor was packed all night. SO FUN. Here are a couple pictures. (You can click on them to enlarge.) The group photo is of "Churchill/Hoover Women" -- staff and moms from the boys' schools. Can you guess which is Bergen's first-grade teacher?! :), Jen

EMERGENCY ROOM

As you can see Bergen fell on the trampoline. Total disconnect at the elbow along with a complete fracture (the crooked piece) to the right arm. It was scary as Bergen's arm looked like a pink sock with 2 sticks shoved in it sideways. No bone went thru the skin but you would think is was about to. His wrist is at the top of the X-ray image while his elbow is at the bottom.

Bergen now has a blue cast for about 8 weeks(?) with some pain to deal with but he is OK. We are all thankful for the ER people as they did a great job at getting it fixed without surgery.
